SILLYweek CRAPcollection 05

CLICK HERE TO SEE 7 MORE CRAPbitz
In honour of WORLD SILLYweek 2005 [zHu] decided to take a walk around the block and document STREETcrap to mark its existence for WORLD SILLYweek 2005. In addition, will accept submissions from others who may wish to put such collections together – personal collections, public collections, corporate collections, institutional collections, investment collections, whatever.

The 'curatorial thesis' informing this and other collections was CRAPbased. And, consistent with WORLD SILLYweek motto, "collect the crap and take the urine", together with the number 11, the CHANCEelement and the FOUNDplace, these things informed the selection processes, the content and the format of the collections – and the forms they took. It is envisaged that such collections will be offered to an appropriate public institution(s) and that they will be catalogued/documented. Once the cataloguing has been completed HARDcopy and digital versions will be made available via this Website.

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS
In order to make the SILLYcollections project as accessible as possible it has been decided that the points of engagement will be simple and open to as many who wish to engage with the project.
  • Firstly, groups of 11 items of "valueless crap" – however it's imagined by whoever submits it – are being requested all of which will be combined to form 'a collection'
  • Secondly, all 11 items submitted will be included in 'the collection'.
  • Thirdly, the total volume of all 11 physical items for COLLECTION # 1 must fit within the volume of a standard shoebox and in the case of COLLECTION # 2, be no longer than 4' 33" in duration.
Please submit your CRAPcollection to a MUSINGplace near you as a consequence of the WORLD SILLYweek 2015 program.

POSSUMdays for WORLD SILLYweek 2015

Here is something REALLYsilly, in Tasmania POSSUMS ARE PESTS mostly because we do not eat them. They get into roofs and pee in ceilings, they eat people's fruit and trash the trees etc. etc. etc. However, for Tasmania's Aboriginal people, possum (timita palawa-kani) was a CULTURALfood and the fur figured in cultural life.

From mTasmania, POSSUMmeat is EXPORTED to China where they are a delicacy BUT Tasmanians show their silliness by NOT EATING POSSUM ... generally. It's not like there is no information available relative to cooking possum and its not like possum is not good to eat ... IT IS!

Some people think possums are sweet cuddly little things and too nice to eat. Well, try picking one up for a cuddle and you may well change your mind.

Anyway WORLD SILLYweek on TAMAR aims to put all this to right and cure one or two POSSUMvirgins of their wayward ways. Indeed Pierre's  88 George St. Launceston is looking at how they can help out. Check out Pierre's here http://www.pierres.net.au/ OR here  https://www.facebook.com/PierresBrasserie

WORLD SILLYweek on TAMAR is looking for other restaurants, cafe whatever to help POSSUMvirgins overcome their problem. Advice may be found below

SHORTEST DAY ON THE TAMAR

In 2015 we are going with the advice we got from MUSEUM VICTORIA not what we  got back in 2011 – MV had a diagram. BUT if you have any issues with this take them up with Martin George at the QVMAG !

Thank you for your enquiry. To my amazement, I find that the information on the Museum of Victoria's web page is incorrect.

The June solstice for 2011 occurs on June 21 at 17:17 Universal time, which is June 22 at 03:17 Eastern Standard Time in Australia.

The shortest day here - as in Melbourne - this year is therefore JUNE 22, not June 21. The longest night is the night of JUNE 21-22.

This does vary from year to year depending on the exact time of the solstice.

Part of the reason for the confusion is that some calendars are printed at different longitudes (latitude is not relevant). For example, in England, the longest day (not shortest, because England is in the northern hemisphere) is June 21, because the solstice this year falls on the local calendar date of June 21. This June 21 solstice date would also apply, for example, in South Africa, because of its longitude.

The reason for the variation of solstice time each year is because the year if 365.2422 days long - not a whole number of days. So the general trend is for the relevant event each year (e.g. the June solstice) to occur about 6 hours later for three years in a row, then to 'revert' to a time about 18 hours earlier because of the leap year inserting a day into the calendar. .

I hope this helps to clear things up !!

Yours sincerely,

Martin George

COLLECTelevenz For WORLD SILLYweek

ELEVEN is an auspicious number and especially so during WORLD SILLYweek. Notably the 'week' has 11days and starts at 11:11 am and finishes at 11: 11 am on the 11thday. In any event 11 is a special number ... click here to find out more about 11

With all that in mind, WORLD SILLYweek is an ideal time to do something, lots of things even , by elevens. The most obvious thing to do is to collect '11 things' and do something – almost anything – with them or 'the collection– ideally something to help a charity.

Good sorts of things to collect during WORLD SILLYweek might be ideas, good ideas, bad ideas, silly ideas even, bits of rubbish, bundles of crap, any kind of crapbottle tops, other people's pens, words, meaningless words, bureaucratic commands, bits of red/blue/orange/whatever, broken things, free things, kinds of money, swear words, profanities, idiots, fools, suggestions, people of a kind, bottles of something, weird stuff, threatening things, silly sayings, outrageous remarks, images, visions. politicians with bright ideas, politicians with idiotic beliefs, bureaucrats with too much power ... just about anything really.

WORLD SILLYweek: How to do it Yourself!

As said here before, WORLD SILLYweek is a festive time dedicated to the sanctioning of social transgression, (benign social transgression), the relief of social tensions, unorganised foolishness, communal clowning about and, most importantly, a little bit of serious 'pisstaking'. Importantly it is a DIYfestival!

The week was and is envisaged as being a relatively unstructured 'midyear festival' that:
  • Runs over 11 days starting at 11: 11am on the Friday preceding the weekend before the Midyear Solstice (Winter – southern hemisphere, Summer – northern hemisphere) and finishing at 11: 11pm on the Sunday that follows the solstice;
  • Allows people to make fun of institutions, organisations, leaders, elders, and important people who are accustomed not only to telling other people what to do, but also, to telling them how to do it – and when;
  • Includes a lively mixture of social, cultural and sporting events with a silly twist in their tail and conceived as community and neighbourhood events – family activities too – that are observed with an attitude of 'silliness' and an air of irreverence;
  • Allows, communities, community groups and individuals working alone, to operate within local communities and take the initiative to celebrate WORLD SILLYweek in various ways – Silly Parties, Silly Balls, Silly Dancing, Silly Concerts, Silly Parades, Silly Tournaments, Silly Games, Exhibitions of Silliness, Silly Lectures, Silly Walking, Silly activities no matter what form it may take; and
  • Is understood, and imagined, as a time of sanctioned subversion, a time when the inversion of hierarchies is tolerated and a time given over to parody and satire.
In 2015, WORLD SILLYweek will be celebrated between June 15 & June 25. The action group is dedicating its time to creating opportunities and marketing the ideas liked to WORLD SILLYweek rather than organising specific events. Even so, members of the group are individually working outside the group on various projects and events at various levels.

REMEMBER: Santioned SILLYevents are generally devised to raise money for a REGISTERED Charity
