SILLYennui

ennui
DURING worldSILLYweek trying to be sensible about doing something extraordinarily SILLY is just so, so ennui as to be very, very SILLY

Launceston's Winter Solstice Splash moved to Greens Beach due to flooding .....................Jessica Willard ..................... Loaves and Fishes community partnerships manager Paul O'Rourke with Solstice Swim ambassador Jade Child ahead of Sunday's swim, not at Greens Beach. ..................... Picture: Craig George Loaves and Fishes community partnerships manager Paul O'Rourke with Solstice Swim ambassador Jade Child ahead of Sunday's swim, not at Greens Beach...................... After a change of date due to flooding, Launceston's Winter Solstice Swim has now been moved to a new location. ..................... The fundraising event will now be held at Greens Beach, this Sunday June 27. ..................... Loaves and Fishes community partnerships manager Paul O'Rourke said continued flooding at the Gorge had left organisers with no choice but to move the event. "We did look at alternate, local venues - the Aquatic Centre and Trevallyn Dam - but these were unavailable or unsuitable at short notice," he said. ..................... The Winter Solstice Splash marks one of the shortest days of the year and was originally meant to be held on June 20 before it was pushed back a week due to flooding. ..................... With about 100 people registered to take part in the swim so far, Mr O'Rourke said he hoped the change of venue wouldn't deter people from supporting the worthwhile cause. ..................... "Greens Beach is a great location, and in many ways it's easier, but most importantly a lot safer," he said. ..................... "Even if it stops flooding at the Gorge, the water level is still very high. ..................... "You can't wade in, you have to dive in. It serves a much greater risk. ..................... "So we are hoping people will join us at Greens Beach on Sunday for what will now be an ocean dip." ..................... A fundraising goal of $20,000 has been set for the event, to help support Loaves and Fishes to provide emergency food relief. ..................... The food service relies mostly on donated produce which would otherwise go to waste, providing free meals across the state. Participants have to be 18 years of age and raise at least $50, with registrations available here.

GOING SILLY FOR GOOD

https://www.examiner.com.au/story/3098894/go-silly-for-good-cause/

CREATING the world’s smallest Little Lawn was Launceston’s introduction to World SILLYWeek. ........................ The Little Lawn sprang up in 2002. Two years later Launceston claimed the longest park bench, located in the City Park. ........................ After an 11-year hiatus, Trevallyn arts advocate Ray Norman and others are keen to revive SILLYweek, starting on June 19. ........................ Held elsewhere in the world as part of solstice celebrations, SILLYweek is a ‘‘DIY festival of sanctioned wacky antics’’ with roots in the European silly season from November 11 to Ash Wednesday. ........................ In Europe, SILLYweek usually involves 11 days of events, with each day attributed to a particular theme and each event offering fund-raising for charity. ........................ Already Mr Norman has approached some Launceston restaurateurs to consider plating up possum under quirky dish titles, a Yolko O-no! egg-dropping challenge is under consideration in the CBD, and an artistic interpretation of the Air Force tradition of burning pianos has been mooted. ........................ ‘‘We’ve decided to have a POSSUMday because it is silly-ish and a lot of people don’t fancy the idea of eating possum,’’ he said. ‘‘........................Possum has all kinds of baggage – they get in our ceilings, they eat fruit off our trees – and when I’ve suggested the possibility of eating possum to friends, they’ve said they’d pay good dollars not to eat possum. ........................ ‘‘That settled it. We have to have POSSUMday.’’ ........................ Mr Norman is encouraging community groups to get involved. ........................ ‘‘SILLYweek at heart, though, is all about fund-raising for charity,’’ he said. ........................ ‘‘If an activity or idea sounds wacky, then it suits SILLYweek, with the ultimate aim being to support the community in some way. In no way is it meant to hurt or deride.’’ ........................ Back in 2002, the Little Lawn was unveiled by then-mayor Janie Dickenson as the city’s ‘‘littlest lawn with big possibilities’’. Believed to be the smallest patch of manicured lawn in the world, it was sown into a foot-square patch on the corner of George, York and Earl streets. ........................ Almost before the first blade of grass could break through, the Little Lawn became a bone of contention and it was eventually uprooted.

SILLYpoetry A KIND OF LAUNCESTON TRADITION

Please click on an image to enlarge

In 2001 the Launceston LONGpoem was a community initiative 'curated' by Tim Thorne that like worldSILLYweek affords a social licence to be 'transgressive' and exploitative. Contributors were required to forgo any intellectual property in their contribution.

It turned out that Launceston had a kind of subliminal and latent cohort of transgressive anonymous 'poets' who given the chance, were prepared to contribute 'some really SILLYstuff'. Indeed, the efforts of some raised the ire of the city's Health Inspector who called upon the services 'the cops' known at the time as 'Deanies Meanies' who attended looking to control the 'despicable transgression'.

IN 2021, two decades on, revving up Launceston's transgressive inclination to be poetically transgressive in worldSILLYweek might just alleviate some social tensions. Just a thought, on behalf of a friend.

NB: The four contributions above a samples of the LONGpoem more of which are archived with the Tasmanian State Library.

POLITICALtransgression ON THE LONGESTnight 21.07.21

IF after 11years of effort to drawing attention to shortfalls in the governance and management of this CULTURALinstitution only to watch its governance fail to deliver due to ineptitude, disinterest or dilettantism the time has come to CALLout the recalcitrance. Tonight, the MOSTsignificant night in worldSILLYweek 2012 social licence is granted to be POLITICALLYtransgressive and CALLout BULLshit for the BULLshit it in fact is.

Its time to CALLout the BULLshit of being patronised for being passionate when you are in fact drawing attention to POLITICALLYtransgression and ineptitude in the sure and certain knowledge that, politically, you can be dismissed as 'passionate' – the great political let off for the maintenance of the status quo. As one grows older, after you retire from the field, this time, the muttering in the backroom, well away from earshot of course, the UNkool name calling begins – GRUMPYoldBUGGER, OLDfart, DELUDEDfool, TROUBLEmaker etc. etc. etc.

So as one watches a CULTURALinstitution, a musingplace, go headlong and obliviously into a future of increasing irrelevance, and achieving it increasingly, it requires a kind of tolerance that must in time be exhausted. Then one realises that during worldSILLYweek 2012  POLITICALLYtransgression and SILLYness is quiteOK as is CALLING IT OUT.

SO, the politicians reading this who have POLITICALLYtransgressed outside worldSILLYweek, patronised their constituency and who thus far have not been named, this SILLYseason runs until 11.11am MONDAY JUNE 28.

ON the ULTIMATEday of worldSILLYweek in Launceston recalcitrant SILLYness must be CALLEDout. IF it was just down to a SILLYtransgression one might look away and giggle BUT this is SILLYness in monumental proportions. The really, really SILLYthing is politicians, and bureaucrats saying "TRUST US"!

When you hear SOMEone say that you have worry about the LUNCHmoney you just lent them.

AN EXTRAORDINARY fewMOMENTS ON THE SHORTESTday

History will tell the outcomes of this day!

OUT THE WINDOW EXPECTING NOTHING

It was past 10am on Monday, June 21, on the winter WINTERsolstice, the SHORTESTday of the year at the zingHOUSE and looking forward to the LONGESTnight  in the SOUTHERNhemisphere, the fog came down. This is the SILLIESTday of worldSILLYweek so one goes to the window to see nothing but there was SOMEthing to see and indeed as one looks north towards CANBERRA Barnaby Joyce was WINNING his LEADERSHIPtussle. It is worldSILLYweek so one rests one's case. NOthing is impossible and an impossibility!

SO IT'S SILLYweek AND WE MUST TALK ABOUT BEING IN THE NUDDY APPRENTLY

IN THE NUDDY

It seems that LONNIE entertains the proposition that it is a ‘nice place’ and that it should stay just like that. Since landing on this COVID free APPLE Isle, I’ve come perilously close to putting more than a few with ideas I readily talked about in the village all over.

Nudity is one and come to think of it I cannot recall seeing a painting, drawing whatever of a nude, male or female, in that museum come art gallery “owned and operated by the council”

If anyone used to wide ranging discussion cannot talk about tits, bums and other bits what is going on? If this is a right wing place, as someone has suggested, and as you rustle around in your memory bank, pretty dam quick Hitler comes up – and oh my goodness.

Now it is worldSILLYweek in LONNIE, and apparently there is a DIY social licence in operation for 11 days, then it’s a good time for “collecting the urine” in priggish company. Me I’ve got this burning desire to collect as much urine as possible by talking about nakedness in company that purports to be nice and where sex, religion and politics must never be talked about around the dinner table.

While you can talk about the war, the one we won, Tassie's somewhat Gothic histories are well not  anything that that anyone has an opinion to share on ... mostly.

Let us get real, what else is worth talking about? No wonder this festival is in hiding underground well away from niceness. For these 11 days it is especially a relief to let go and it is kind of encouraging to think about mayors and mayoral hopefuls getting their kit and clobber off for charity. But will they?

 Dr L

GRILLAgirls WORRY ABOUT NUDITY AND WHO DOES GET NAKED IN MUZEUMS

IN LAUNCESTON the question for worldSILLYweek would/could be are there ANY NUDES anywhere in the museum OR art galleries in town because the evidence seems to be that LAUNCESTON is likely to be one of the last places you will find a depiction of a NUDE female or male. SO what are people supposed to look at instead??
