A SILLY FACE: A WEBfind

CLICK ON THE IMAGE TO GO TO SOURCE
SILLINESS is a serious business and images like this suggest all kinds of serious silliness for WORLD SILLYweek . The thing seems to be that not everyone is comfortable about being caught buck naked or silly and there is the rub.

A FACE: Stolen via the Internet

It is quite possible that this face is surreal rather than 'silly'. Some argue that 'surreal' is unquestionably silly and divergent. Others posit the proposition that this debate is deeply embedded in silliness which in turn suggests that this face has a place in the celebration of silliness. Anyway it was stolen via the Internet which may qualify its being here as an act of silliness but that is an open question.

ANOTHER STOLEN SILLYface

WORLD SILLYweek 2011 : How it is celebrated

As said here before, WORLD SILLYweek is a festive time dedicated to the sanctioning of social transgression, (benign social transgression), the relief of social tensions, unorganised foolishness, communal clowning about and, most importantly, a little bit of serious 'pisstaking'.

The week was and is envisaged as being a relatively unstructured 'midyear festival' that:
  • Runs over 11 days starting at 11: 11am on the Friday preceding the weekend before the Midyear Solstice (Winter – southern hemisphere, Summer – northern hemisphere) and finishing at 11: 11pm on the Sunday that follows the solstice;
  • Allows people to make fun of institutions, organisations, leaders, elders, and important people who are accustomed not only to telling other people what to do, but also, to telling them how to do it – and when;
  • Includes a lively mixture of social, cultural and sporting events with a silly twist in their tail and conceived as community and neighbourhood events – family activities too – that are observed with an attitude of 'silliness' and an air of irreverence;
  • Allows, communities, community groups and individuals working alone, to operate within local communities and take the initiative to celebrate WORLD SILLYweek in various ways – Silly Parties, Silly Balls, Silly Dancing, Silly Concerts, Silly Parades, Silly Tournaments, Silly Games, Exhibitions of Silliness, Silly Lectures, Silly Walking, Silly activities no matter what form it may take; and
  • Is understood, and imagined, as a time of sanctioned subversion, a time when the inversion of hierarchies is tolerated and a time given over to parody and satire.
In 2011, WORLD SILLYweek will be celebrated between June 17 & June 27. The action group is dedicating its time to creating opportunities and marketing the ideas liked to WORLD SILLYweek rather than organising specific events. Even so, members of the group are individually working outside the group on various projects and events at various levels.

REMEMBER: Santioned SILLYevents are generally devised to raise money for a REGISTERED Charity

WORLD SILLYweek Kulaz Guide

Each day of SILLYweek has a kula (colour) and a name to guide the gift giving and the way these gifts might be wrapped. For example, a lot of crap wrapped in 'that blue' and given on Tuesday June 21 might well be something, or a lot of stuff, that's screwy OR one wrapped in 'that pink' could well be very freaky if it was given on the 19th – then again it might just be a lot of crap!

REMEMBER: If you are caught out being silly before 11. 11 am Friday June 17 2005 FOOLISHfriday – you've been found out being a BLOODY FOOL and there is no excuse for it.

Likewise, if you are caught being silly after 11. 11am on Monday June 28, DEADmonday the last day of SILLYweek, well you're an ABSOLUTE IDIOT because it's all over and there is no excuse for that either.

IT IS OFFICIAL: Launceston's Shortest Day in 2011 will be June 22

Thank you for your enquiry. To my amazement, I find that the information on the Museum of Victoria's web page is incorrect.

The June solstice for 2011 occurs on June 21 at 17:17 Universal time, which is June 22 at 03:17 Eastern Standard Time in Australia.

The shortest day here - as in Melbourne - this year is therefore JUNE 22, not June 21. The longest night is the night of JUNE 21-22.

This does vary from year to year depending on the exact time of the solstice.

Part of the reason for the confusion is that some calendars are printed at different longitudes (latitude is not relevant). For example, in England, the longest day (not shortest, because England is in the northern hemisphere) is June 21, because the solstice this year falls on the local calendar date of June 21. This June 21 solstice date would also apply, for example, in South Africa, because of its longitude.

The reason for the variation of solstice time each year is because the year if 365.2422 days long - not a whole number of days. So the general trend is for the relevant event each year (e.g. the June solstice) to occur about 6 hours later for three years in a row, then to 'revert' to a time about 18 hours earlier because of the leap year inserting a day into the calendar. .

I hope this helps to clear things up !!

Yours sincerely,

Martin George

Garlic Day in Launceston: June 22 The Shortest Day

Even if it is not truly silly during WORLD SILLYweek in Launceston we should be celebrating the shortest day of the year by planting garlic (Allium sativum) somewhere. Launceston's very own GURUgardner, Peter Cundall, advocates that we should be doing this on the shortest day so as we can harvest our garlic on the longest day along with other members of Peter's 'ONIONtribe.'

So we might also celebrate by eating garlic and there are many many wonderful things to eat with lots of garlic in them. Garlic is very good for you .... click here to get some receipts

If you do not have a garden perhaps during WORLD SILLYweek it may be a good time to indulge in some guerrilla gardening along with some GARLICdinners.

CHARTY DONATIONS AND WORLD SILLYweek IN LAUNCESTON

WORLD SILLYweek is the quintessential DIY festival and a festive time totally dedicated to the sanctioning of social transgression – benign social transgression where nobody is hurt – the relief of social tensions, unorganised foolishness, communal clowning about and, most importantly, a little bit of serious urine collection – all in the aid of charity.

In 2011, if you are organising a
WORLD SILLYweek DIYfestival event it is entirely up to you which charity you support. However, the WORLD SILLYweek PEOPLE would appreciate it if you used the comment section below to identify YOUR EVENT and tell the world which REGISTERED charity you will be supporting and ultimately to tell us all how much you raised.

The WORLD SILLYweek PEOPLE will be supporting the Examiner’s Winter Appeal as well as establishing a SILLYweek WHITE KNIGHT ARTIST SUPPORTS FUND. Why? It is simple really as artist notoriously do not earn enough from their arts practice to live and without them our lives would be the poorer for it ... click here for more information

The Examiner’s Winter Appeal is rightly directed toward raising money for the disenfranchised poor in our community. Artists do have access to grant programs but generally these funding agencies have meagre funding available. Generally
SILLYweek funding will only be available for Launceston based artists or arts projects unlikely to or unable to win mainstream arts funding. As a White Knight Fund artists will not be able to apply for funding, rather the fund’s trustees will from time, given that funds are available:
  • Buy works from an artist and donate it to a collection;
  • Commission a work;
  • Pay an artist’s travel costs to do something in support of their practice; or
  • Provide top up funding to enable the artist to participate in a project.
These are just examples of what this fund will support.

When information about the trustees is available it will be posted in the Comments Section below as will all relevant information relevant to the
WORLD SILLYweek charity funding.

SILLYcrap Gift Giving

SILLYcrap is the generic name for a variety of manifestations of a key SILLYweek initiative for 2011. What's intended? It's simple really in that is seen a yet another gift giving time where 'the gift' that might be given for all kinds of reasons might:
  • Firstly, contain REALLY useless crap – crap found lying around the house, bits of junk mail, pointless newspaper cuttings, stuff picked up in the street, wherever, and that ultimately takes on a new value as a gift during SILLYweek ;
  • Secondly, have the potential to be both COLLECTORSitem and CULTURALstatements ;
  • Thirdly, make that simultaneously carry all kinds of meaning – innuendoes even – that might well fit the SILLYweek circumstance.
Background
During worldSILLYweek communities all over the world are being encouraged to temporarily leave their COMFORTzone and exchange unwanted goods as gifts in various contexts – much as people do during other festive seasons, Christmas for example.

In order to make the gift giving affordable, people are being encouraged to gift wrap anything that's absolutely useless, and that's thought to be totally valueless, and found at the back of cupboards, under a bed or in a myriad of out-of-sight places in every household. Once catagorised as
SILLYcrap it may then be offered as a gift during SILLYweek . As is often said "it's the thought that counts!"

The wonderful thing about a SILLYcrap gift is that there is little need, indeed little incentive, to open it to discover it's contents. Such gifts can safely be stored for some future occasion without too much curiosity being roused. Alternatively, if they are opened, and the crap has been carefully selected, there is every possibility that it will deliver a message to the recipient. Even when it's left unopened it may well do the same!

Working Definition:
crap: (krp) Vulgar Slang n. 1. Excrement – actual & euphemistic ... 2. An act of defecating – actual & euphemistic 3. Foolish, deceitful, or boastful language. 4. Cheap or shoddy material 5. Miscellaneous or disorganized items; clutter 6. Insolent talk or behaviour.
Middle English crappe, chaff, from Old French crappe, from Medieval Latin crappa, perhaps of Germanic origin.] Source: The American Heritage¨ Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition

CRAPgifts befiting the spirit of the SILLYweek season

About WORLD SILLYweek in Launceston

Founded in Launceston Tasmania in 2004 WORLD SILLYweek is the quintessential DIY and a festive time totally dedicated to the sanctioning of social transgression – benign social transgression where nobody is hurt the relief of social tensions, unorganised foolishness, communal clowning about and, most importantly, a little bit of serious urine collection all in the aid of charity.

WORLD SILLYweek is now an international festival celebrated in the middle of the calendar year and that encompasses "'the solstice". However other SILLYweek festivals at other times are possible and indeed appropriate. For example, there may be a time of year in a specific place when it would be appropriate to temporarily suspend all the social norms and niceties and turn conventions upside down just to allow a community "to blow off some steam" – and to do so without fear of reproach.

Let's call such a place "Zeon"! then SILLYweek in Zeon might be a town festival that happens say after the harvest of something, or around some auspicious day in the community, that lasts for 11 days so it can take in two weekends and has a particular day in the middle somewhere when everyone observes some obscure and/or silly social convention. WORLD SILLYweek is just such a time and one that can be celebrated all round the world in accord with the mid year solstice Summer in the Northern hemisphere and winter in the Southern.

The motto for WORLD SILLYweek is "collect the crap and take the urine". Consistent with all that been said before, WORLD SILLYweek is envisaged as being a relatively unstructured 'midyear festival':

  • Where everything important happens at 11something – for example, it runs over 11 days starting at 11: 11am on the Friday preceding the weekend before the Midyear Solstice and finishing at 11: 11am on the Monday that follows the solstice – when everyone has to stop being 'silly';
  • That allows people to make fun of institutions, organisations, leaders, elders, and important people who are used to not only telling other people what to do, but also, how to do it – and when, and with gusto;
  • Includes a dynamic mixture of social, cultural and sporting events with a silly twist and conceived in the spirit of silliness – often interrelated events that spin off each other;
  • That allows, communities, community groups and individuals working alone, to operate within local communities and take the initiative to celebrate WORLD SILLYweek in various ways  – Silly Parties, Silly Balls, Silly Dancing, Silly Concerts, Silly Parades, Silly Tournaments, Silly Games, Exhibitions of Silliness, Silly Lectures, Silly Walking, Silly activities no matter what form it may take;
  • Which is understood, and imagined, as a time of sanctioned subversion, a time when the inversion of hierarchies is tolerated and a time given over to parody and satire.
  • Where each day of WORLD SILLYweek has a designated colour to guide the silliness ;
In 2011, WORLD SILLYweek will be celebrated between 11:11 am Friday June 18 AND 11:11 am Monday June 27. Action groups worldwide are dedicating their time to creating opportunities and marketing the ideas linked to WORLD SILLYweek rather than organising specific events.

Nonetheless, members of these groups are already working outside their groups on various projects and events. It is never too late to organise a event – unless of course it is June 27 and it's 11:12am.

The 11 days of WORLD SILLYweek are totally dedicated to the sanctioning of benign social transgression, unorganised foolishness, communal clowning about and, most importantly, a little bit of serious 'mickey-taking' all in the aid of charity.
